“Clear eyes, full hearts. Can’t lose.”

with 2 comments

I’ve been watching Friday Night Lights lately and I can’t help but see so much Christian imagery through out the show. During practices and games, the Panthers always say, “Clear eyes, full hearts. Can’t lose.” The more I repeat this line, the more it means to me and the more I want to live by it.

When we have “clear eyes,” or when our focus is solely on God and when our hearts or full of Him, we cannot lose.

To put it plainly, we are at war. Every day, every person we come in contact with, these are our battlefields. But the war was won when God was God. In His sovereignty, He orchestrated not just a victorious plan, but He orchestrated victory from the beginning. Just so as long as we have our heart’s eyes focused on God and have our hearts filled with Him, we cannot lose because we have already been won.

Brothers and sisters, I am guilty of having my vision obscured and my heart filled with the things that are not of God. And when I reflect back on those times, my heart feels heavy. But in some mind boggling way, God tells me that I am victorious. That I cannot lose. Christ made sure of that.

Surely this does not mean that we can live our lives blindly and with our hearts filled with the things of this world. It is time that we live like saints who have been won by Christ, with our vision clear and our hearts full.

500 Days of Summer [spoiler]

with 6 comments

I waited a long time to watch this movie and finally watched it last night. Overall, I think it was an enjoyable movie. Loved the “feel” of the way the film was pieced together and the music was great too.

It seems that in general, most guys hated the movie and most girls liked it. I know that that sentence has a few implications to it and it might imply that I’m a girl. I’m not. But here’s how I see it:

Summer was definitely messed up. That doesn’t mean to say that Tommy wasn’t an idiot. In one scene, Summer tells Tommy that she can’t give him what he wants and at that moment, he was OK with it. Lets just say he was thinking with his wrong head. But is it so absurd that someone can not want something they don’t fully understand? To Summer, she never experienced love and that’s why she never wanted a serious relationship.

So how did she end up married just a few months after breaking up with Tommy? She found the love of her life. That’s it. What she did was definitely wrong, but in THIS SCENARIO is it so far fetched? I don’t think so.

In any case, true love as media portrays it is not considered true love in my book. As Christians, we love because Christ loved us first. When we model that love to one another, it’s a beautiful thing.

Oh, and that Zooey Deschanel? Yeah, she’s freaking cute.

“With great power comes great responsibility.”

without comments

In lieu of Tiger Wood’s latest press release, I guess this would be an appropriate time to discuss infidelity and reputation. His act of unfaithfulness to his wife has seriously caused an uproar in world. The interesting thing is, infidelity happens all the time. This is obviously a bad thing, but why does Tiger get so much heat for it? The general public put Tiger on such a high pedestal based on what? Media’s assumption of him? Shouldn’t any person who cheats on his/her spouse get the same treatment as Tiger?

But (and I apologize before hand for the oncoming cheesiness), “with great power comes great responsibility.” Tiger is one of the greatest golfers in the history of golf. And with that reputation, I feel that in some sense, there is a greater standard to which he should be held.

Someone recently told me that what a pastor says to his congregation, or his flock, is between him and his flock. I agree to a certain degree. Yet, if this pastor is one of the most influential pastors in the world, I feel that what he says to his congregation, which will then be heard or read by thousands of other Christians via podcasts, journals, magazines, etc., should be responsible for what he says. There are so many different theological views within the Christian sphere and in some cases, it’s not our place to say which is right and wrong. Of course, to a certain extent, we should hopefully be able to discern what is right and wrong, but not all theological views are black and white. Lets remember folks, theology is our interpretation of the Bible. As humans, there is always room for error.

In any case, may this be a reminder to all people who are in some leadership position (not just leaders of the church or in the church, but spiritual leaders such as husbands and men who are dating): You are responsible not only for your own spiritual well being, but that of your ministry, wife, girlfriend, small group, etc. Every Sunday I am reminded of my responsibility as a teacher for our church’s children ministry. It is not a menial task. The more influential you are to other Christians and their spiritual lives, be cautious and live righteously.

This is something that I am working on and something that I feel should be thought through very carefully.

“With great power, comes great responsibility.”

Had a great time at Disneyland! Great company, lots of laughs, and surprisingly, NO WAITING!

I’d go more if there were a reason to. Time to get me a woman!
