“With great power comes great responsibility.”

In lieu of Tiger Wood’s latest press release, I guess this would be an appropriate time to discuss infidelity and reputation. His act of unfaithfulness to his wife has seriously caused an uproar in world. The interesting thing is, infidelity happens all the time. This is obviously a bad thing, but why does Tiger get so much heat for it? The general public put Tiger on such a high pedestal based on what? Media’s assumption of him? Shouldn’t any person who cheats on his/her spouse get the same treatment as Tiger?

But (and I apologize before hand for the oncoming cheesiness), “with great power comes great responsibility.” Tiger is one of the greatest golfers in the history of golf. And with that reputation, I feel that in some sense, there is a greater standard to which he should be held.

Someone recently told me that what a pastor says to his congregation, or his flock, is between him and his flock. I agree to a certain degree. Yet, if this pastor is one of the most influential pastors in the world, I feel that what he says to his congregation, which will then be heard or read by thousands of other Christians via podcasts, journals, magazines, etc., should be responsible for what he says. There are so many different theological views within the Christian sphere and in some cases, it’s not our place to say which is right and wrong. Of course, to a certain extent, we should hopefully be able to discern what is right and wrong, but not all theological views are black and white. Lets remember folks, theology is our interpretation of the Bible. As humans, there is always room for error.

In any case, may this be a reminder to all people who are in some leadership position (not just leaders of the church or in the church, but spiritual leaders such as husbands and men who are dating): You are responsible not only for your own spiritual well being, but that of your ministry, wife, girlfriend, small group, etc. Every Sunday I am reminded of my responsibility as a teacher for our church’s children ministry. It is not a menial task. The more influential you are to other Christians and their spiritual lives, be cautious and live righteously.

This is something that I am working on and something that I feel should be thought through very carefully.

“With great power, comes great responsibility.”
