As the title says, I have unlocked the secrets of successful, modern day photography. 99% of flickr photos look like this. 100% of wedding photographers process pictures like this. OK, I might be exaggerating a little bit, but I’m almost 110% sure that my numbers are right. JUST KIDDING.

Dusted off the camera and wanted to do something new (to me that is).

In retrospect or retrophotoshopspect, I could have taken these even further, but you get the idea. On another note, Shaina’s documentary on Paul de Partee was excellent! By far the best today. Great job holding it down during the Q&A too!

Dusting off the camera

It’s been a REALLY long time since I last used my camera to take pictures. All these people at church have been taking pictures and I felt like I needed to ease myself back into things.

It’s annoying carrying a camera around, but it’s also kinda nice. I’ll try to post more frequently!

Fosselman’s

Over Thanksgiving, a group of us went roaming around south Pasadena in search for sweet treats and good times. Despite some setbacks, we luckily got both. If you’ve never been to Fosselman’s, check it out! The dual top ice cream cone is not a manufacturing error gone right (or maybe it was), but it sure is pure genius. Their Sam Adam’s ice cream was super tasty also. Better than the Guinness flavored ice cream at Scoops.

Oh and Jesse’s mad rush to finish his ice cream so that he could try the Sam Adam’s ice cream? Priceless.

I rented a tilt/shift lens this past weekend for my cousin’s wedding. Sadly, the wicked witch of the north (AKA the wedding coordinator) prohibited me from using it to it’s full potential. But I digress…

All in all, the lens was pretty darn cool, but definitely requires some time spent with it to learn it’s ins and outs. In “normal” photography, the focal plane is always parallel to the sensor, but a tilt/shift lens allows the photographer to change this plane. This allows the photographer to have a tremendous amount of control over depth of field. Other uses allow the photographer to correct perspective distortion and to take panoramas without moving the camera back.

There’s so much more to keep in mind when using this lens and the tilt/shift adjustments. Not only does tilting or shifting change the perspective or focal plane, it also introduces vignetting and changes in the exposure are also necessary. I feel like extreme tilt or shift also affects the sharpness of the lens. But overall, the lens is very fun. If my large format lenses sell, this lens may be next on my list.

IN A NUTSHELL:

Pros:
- Options! Change that focal plane!
- Great colors
- Sharp (for the most part)
- Opens tons of creative doors

Cons:
- Lack of sharpness when using extreme tilt/shift (but could be due to poor technique)*
- Takes some time getting use to, but obviously there will be a learning curve
- If you don’t have Live View, you better have a split-prism focusing screen
